The Elementary Years    (8-12)

Fostering a Love for Learning

The Elementary years are building on the foundation established in the foundation years.  It is a time for building on the basics, exploring interests, and developing a love for learning. Basic academic skills are built upon through a broad list of opportunities, assignments, practice skills, and enrichment activities.  The sense of belonging will expand to the world through history and cultures while gaining a deeper understanding and appreciation for community and country.

Learning Benchmarks

Picture
When children are between the ages of 8-12, the capacity for logic emerges.  They learn to distinguish between themselves and others and they gain a sense of ownership for their own ideas.  A love for learning naturally develops and the time in the day devoted to learning will gradually increase.   When younger, children perceive authority  as other people.  At this age, they begin to view authority as a set of rules as well as people.  A sense of "sin" develops and they become capable of repentance and forgiveness.  The objectives for a 8-12 year old child include:
  • Education of the heart and mind  with great children's literature, history stories, nature stories, religious stories, art, and music
  • Continue to develop the sense of identity and community with scripture and history stories, examples, and family work routines.
  • Allow time for personal expression without negative feedback.
  • Provide for accountability by evaluating children's work and respond with "good job" or "do over" to encourage best effort.
