Language Arts is a multi-faceted discipline. While children are young (especially under the age of 10), a well rounded Language Arts program will encourage the development of the skills of observation, pondering, communication, symbolic thinking, and service. When these skills are developed at a foundational level of learning, children will be in a better position to understand deeper level thinking and abstract thought when they get older.
