Their sense of identity and self-worth are strengthened through personal study and service to others in home and community. More in-depth academic skills are introduced as students pursue their areas of interest, master life skills, explore career paths, and prepare for adulthood. Increased skills in leadership, communication, and a strong work ethic are cultivated with an emphasis on community service and citizen involvement. This phase of learning is a good time to take the ACT and SAT and begin college assessments and preparation.

Young Men and Young Women who are age 12 and over have an increased sensitivity to the physical differences between self and others. Their ability to deal with abstract ideas increases, and they have a heightened sense of spiritual awareness. During the teenage years, youth will feel a growing desire to "own" their knowledge of truth instead of relying on others. They are able to see that authority can be viewed as principles that govern both rules and people.
