The Foundation Years

Ages 0-8:  Planting and nurturing the seeds of self, family, and community

Resources
Picture
The foundation years are the time when children should be encouraged to discover their identity, core values such as good/bad, right/wrong, true/false, and develop their sense of belonging. Basic developmental and academic skills are introduced through discovery and curiosity, and they mature through encouragement.

Birth to 4 years

From birth to age four, children depend on adults for care and protection. They are innocent, impressionable, receptive, and open to the influence of their surroundings.   During this stage, parents lay the foundation for all learning.  The objectives for children 0-4 are:
  • Safety and security
  • Trust in caregivers
  • Family Values
  • Family Identity
  • Family Routines
  • Value and love of work and play

4-8 Years

When children are between the ages of 4-8 they show a natural desire and curiosity for learning.  They are also developing a moral code and value system of their own.  A parent's influence is paramount at this stage.  The objectives for a 4-8 year old child include:
  • Education of the heart with great children's literature, history stories, art, and music
  • Develop core values through story, example, and family work routines
  • Guide children in their understanding of right and wrong, good and bad, true and false
  • Preserve the JOY of learning through hands on discovery and experiences
  • Remember that children learn through play.  These early years should be filled with a variety of play opportunities.
  • Begin basic reading and math lessons for a few hours each week after the child shows an interest.
